Many found the most memorable moment in the movie “up” was the montage of Carl and Ellie’s life. It showed their relationship from childhood to falling in love to getting married to eventually growing old together.
But what I found as the most profound moment was when Carl opens the book after getting to paradise falls.
He had thought the book was solely dedicated to his wife’s adventure in paradise falls thus it was empty. But what he found was there was more to the book than the first few pages. In it he saw pictures of their entire lives. He had never thought to see this side of his wife. All those years, he experienced the part of his wife that he thought was longing for a dream long forgotten. A dream he assumed that she took to her grave.
In truth, Ellie knew that childhood dream was not realistic and moved on. I think this was especially true after she found out she was infertile. She dreamed of going to paradise falls as a kid and after that, being a mother. Both of which were impossible.
After she had some time to process her emotions, the one man that had been in her life the whole time came to cheer her up. She must have then realized that so long as she had him, she was going to be alright.
She instead spent her life with the person she loved most. Cherishing every moment together. Every birthday, every picnic and every experience they went through together. It was then that Carl realized that all this time, she had grown and matured way more than he had thought.
This was such a profound moment because it was then Carl knew she had gotten what she wanted. She had lived a truly happy and fulfilling life. And now, with the last message from his wife. He can finally move on.
This scene in the movie made me think that we sometimes miss things. Even if we live through it everyday or are with the same person everyday. There are just some aspects of life or the person’s true feelings that we do not notice. Sometimes somewhere down the line we do notice but it might be too late. That’s why it is so important to cherish every moment and live our lives to the fullest. Do our best and learn new things everyday. In time, we will see that it was worth it.
